Abstract
A 39 years old female patient was having episodes of body stiffness that affected her motor abilities. A lipoma in the corpus callosum was identified by Computer Tomography. Her condition deteriorated rapidly and seizures were refractory to any treatment. Seizure frequency and severity increased incapacitating the patient completely. When seizure control was not achieved by any other treatment, the patient decided to undergo experimental therapy with Ion Magnetic Inductor. The treatment with the Ion Magnetic Inductor notably reduced seizure frequency and intensity. After treatment the patient was able to return to work and other normal activities. The long term effects are not yet described however there were not adverse events to date The patient is still undergoing Ion Magnetic Inductor treatment daily in the same way other epileptic patients must continue with the use of anti epileptic drugs for life. There is evidence in the literature that other types of electromagnetic therapy as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), may be useful in the treatment of refractory seizures. The potential advantage of the Ion Magnetic Inductor over the rTMS is that there is not a need to locate precisely the epileptogenic focus making the treatment procedure simpler and faster.

Building on previous findings demonstrating that breast cancer cells emit unique
electromagnetic signals, engineering researchers at the University of Arkansas
have found that a single cancerous cell produces electric signals proportional
to the speed at which the cell divides. Their model reveals that heightened
movement of ions at the boundary of the cancerous cell produces larger
electrical signals.
The findings will help scientists understand the biophysics associated with
rapidly dividing breast cancer cells and may contribute to the development of
new detection and treatment techniques.
All cells maintain a difference in voltage between their intracellular and
extracellular media, said Ahmed Hassan, doctoral student in electrical
engineering. Previous work found that MCF-7, a standard breast cancer cell line,
hyperpolarizes meaning simply that it increases its membrane voltage in negative
polarity during two critical stages prior to cell division. What were trying to
do is build a better understanding of how this complicated mechanism works.
Hassan works under the direction of Magda El-Shenawee, associate professor of
electrical engineering. In previous work, El-Shenawee created a
microwave-imaging system that provides sharp, three-dimensional images of hard
objects buried within soft tissue. She was able to do this by transmitting and
receiving electromagnetic waves that traveled through soft tissue and bounced
off the hard object.
he new direction of El-Shenawees research does not require transmission of
electromagnetic waves. Rather, in a process known as passive biopotential
diagnosis special sensors only receive electromagnetic waves. They read the
unique signals released by activity within and around a growing tumor. As
mentioned above, Hassan and El-Shenawee focused on a single cell, which may help
researchers recognize abnormalities long before cell aggregates reach the tumor
stage. A 1-millimeter tumor comprises tens of thousands of cells.
New Cancer Treatment with Promising Results
Dr. Rafael Davalos , a bioengineering professor at Virginia Tech is working with
his former Ph.D. adviser, Dr. Boris Rubinsky, of UC-Berkeley doing new cancer
research to develop a minimally invasive cancer treatment using short electrical
pulses targeting only the cancer cells. Already, this procedure has cured cancer
in livers of male Sprague-Daley laboratory rats without using any drugs.
Their work with this potentially new cancer cure began with cell cultures in
test tubes and progressed to rats, then mice. Dr. Rubinsky reported doing tests
on pigs in early 2007. In 2008, trials with human prostate cancer will begin. If
those trials are successful, they will try to cure cancer of other types in
humans.
New Cancer Cure
This new cancer treatment uses irreversible electroporation (IRE) to kill cancer
cells by electrocuting them. Healthy cells nearby are not harmed. As part of the
procedure, the cancer cells are monitored using electrical impedance tomography
to be sure no cancer cells are missed.
Cells are usually impermeable, but these electric micropulses open holes in the
cell's membranes in a matter or seconds. Some of these holes remain open and the
cell cannot repair them. This is the key and what kills the cancer cells as the
contents drain out.
Dr. Davalos and Dr. Rubinsky have been able to treat different types of
cancerous tissues in the laboratory. They treat an area while they watch the
progress using tomography. Then they move the needles and repeat the procedure
as necessary. The treatment takes only about one minute per affected area. Since
the pulses are very short, the cells do not heat up. The procedure is relatively
simple and inexpensive and can be done in any hospital.
This procedure avoids a key problem with traditional cancer treatments where the
doctor cannot tell if the cancer cells are dead until about a week after the
treatment. Some cancer cells can be missed if the oncologist is not aggressive
enough, yet if they are too aggressive, surrounding healthy tissue may be
damaged. Using IRE allows immediate feedback, enabling the doctor to watch how
successful the treatment is while it is being performed.
Dr. Douglas Scherr, the clinical director of urologic oncology at the Weill
Medical School of Cornell University believes that this treatment of
"irreversible electroporation" could be effective in the treatment of the types
of cancers where the tumors can be easily imaged, such as kidney cancer, breast
cancer or brain cancer. Research is being conducted at Weill Medical School to
more accurately image the cancer, which should result in even more accurate
location of the tumor.

Neuro-oncologist Herb Engelhard explains it's based on a new finding that cells are most vulnerable to electromagnetic fields when they're dividing.
"Normally in the brain, cells aren't dividing at all-- very infrequently. And cancer cells are dividing very rapidly or very often," he says. "So this treatment focuses on the property of the cancer cells, namely that they are rapidly dividing."
Principal investigator of the arm of the study at the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center, one of a dozen U.S. hospitals conducting the trial, Engelhard can't disclose results while the study is ongoing. But, he says, "I've been very pleased with the results that I've seen so far."
Engelhard, a brain surgeon, isn't just an MD. He also has his PhD in tumor biology. "I was skeptical when I first heard about this treatment, I must say that," he says. "But I think you have to keep an open mind about new things, and so I agreed to be one of the investigators in this study.
"We've been very happy to find that there is minimal toxicity-- of course we all know about the possible bad side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy," he says. "And so far this new type of treatment has been found to be very safe. And what the study is doing is looking to see whether or not it's effective."
"There's no cutting, there's no drugs involved at all, it's very simple, almost
too simple," Engelhard continues.
"We're putting electrodes on someone's head, we're putting an electric field
through that, and that electric field is killing cancer cells."
He was impressed by the results of a small safety study, now published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "Not only was it found to be safe in the pilot study, it was found that it did improve survival," says Engelhard, who was not involved in any of the device's early studies.
In the pilot study in Europe, researchers led by Yoram Palti of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology tested their prototype device in ten patients with recurrent GBM. While the purpose of the trial was to look for side effects, the authors compared the subjects' time to progression (how long until their cancer progressed), PFS6 (percent that survive six months with no progression) and overall survival with compiled statistics from clinical trials of the best available treatments for recurrent GBM. The treatment exceeded the historical outcomes in all of these measures,more than doubling the expected survival time on average.
"2"> That led the researchers to ask the US Food and Drug Administration to approve a Phase III efficacy trial without first conducting a large Phase II safety trial. Palti, who invented the device, has formed a company called NovoCure that's funding the research.
The Phase III trial, which is still recruiting patients, is a randomized controlled study-- to tell if the device is truly effective, only half of the patients are randomly selected to use the new device. Patients who aren't randomly assigned to the device get the most advanced available treatments.

"Ever since I've been in this research I've been doing better, okay? So here we are, I feel good, I don't have all the reactions from chemo and radiation. And it's working out."
Engelhard says new treatments for GBM are badly needed because the disease is so insidious and, in fact, isn't really a tumor at all. "It might show up on the MRI scan as a circle or a ball, but really, by the time it's seen on the MRI scan, individual cells have gone deep into the brain. So glioblastoma multiforme is really cancer of the brain, and it's very, very difficult to treat," he says. "Once the tumor does not respond to radiation therapy and chemotherapy-- because surgery can't remove it all-- then one does have a very short time left on average."
While Englehard acknowledges that the device is "cumbersome," he regards it as a prototype that could be refined if it's proved to work. He also says it's unknown whether it has any long-lasting effects.
Quatrano doesn't care if he needs to wear the device for the rest of his life. His advice to others diagnosed with this vicious opponent?

семинаре приняли участие специалисты из Германии, сотрудники МЦ «БиЭлТе» и
врачи-онкологи.
Для современного общества проблема онкологических заболеваний была и остается приоритетной. По прогнозам ВОЗ за период с 1999 года по 2020 год количество онкологических больных во всем мире возрастет в 2 раза. Основными причинами заболевания являются гормональные нарушения (рак молочной железы и простаты), вирусы папилломы (рак шейки матки), курение (рак поджелудочной железы и мочевого пузыря), вирусная инфекция (вирус гепатита В, вирус папилломы, вирус Эпштейн-Барра и т.д.), диетические факторы, загрязнение окружающей среды, пребывание на солнце.
В
развитых странах большое внимание уделяется профилактике, улучшению качества
ранней диагностики и лечения, в связи с этим наблюдается тенденция к замедлению
роста заболеваемости и снижение смертности от злокачественных опухолей. В России,
таких, антираковых программ, пока нет. Следовательно, в будущем основной процент
увеличения онкологических больных будет приходиться на малоразвитые страны и
Россию.
В связи с этим, очень актуальным на семинаре был доклад К. Штайнера (Мюнхен) о
возможностях аппарата для ранней диагностики рака кожи. Дермаскоп является
единственной визуальной системой для скрининга рака кожи, анализа невусов,
опознания светлых раковых опухолей кожи посредством флуоресцентной диагностики.
Этот аппарат стал незаменимым помощником для врачей онкологов-дерматологов.
Главный
врач МЦ «БиЭлТе» А. Жани (Москва) познакомил участников семинара с эффективной
методикой лечения на терапевтической установке БЭТ-7, которая позволяет
осуществлять лечение как поверхностных, так и глубокорасположенных опухолевых
тканей методом электроканцерной терапии. Этот метод может применяться как
самостоятельный метод лечения, а так же как компонент комплексного лечения в
сочетании с хирургическим, химио- и/или лучевой терапией. Так же перед
участниками семинара выступили больные, которые прошли лечение на БЭТ-7. Они
охотно ответили на вопросы врачей, рассказали о своих ощущениях во время
терапевтических процедур на установке БЭТ-7 и о своем самочувствии.
В ходе конференции был представлен еще один терапевтический аппарат нового
поколения – ПАП ИМИ. Это уникальная физиотерапевтическая установка, по принципу
работы не имеющая аналогов среди существующих терапевтических приборов. Как
известно, любое заболевание на клеточном уровне проявляется сниженными или
нарушенными функциями клеточной мембраны, вследствие чего снижается заряд
мембранного потенциала. При прохождении курса физиотерапии на ПАП ИМИ,

В 1994 году на конференции Пространство, Время, Гравитация, я познакомился с Проф. Паппас из Греции. Позже, в 2000 году он передал мне материалы по медицинскому оборудованию, разработанному его фирмой. Устройство называется "генератор биологической энергии" и подробно описано на сайте http://www.papimi.gr/ патент США № 5556418, всемирный патент PCT/US93. Устройство прошло все необходимые исследования и сертифицировано для применения в медицинских целях при различных клинических случаях: рак, СПИД, диабет, гепатит, воспалительные процессы и др.
Работа устройства основана на принципе магнитной индукции. В катушке диаметром около 30 см создаются короткие импульсы тока при напряжении источника 18 Вольт. Мощность в импульсе не указывается в документации, но по данным Проф. Паппас она сравнима с разрядом молнии. Форма импульсов характеризуется крутым фронтом. Импульсы биполярные. В ходе экспериментов были подобраны такие параметры импульсов, которые производят наибольший биоэнергетический эффект. Под биоэнергией здесь понимается активация внутренних степеней свободы молекул биомассы. Тепловая энергия, напротив, есть активация внешних степеней свободы молекул. Другими словами, учитывая связь теплоты и энтропии, установка Проф. Паппас индуцирует в биомассе антиэнтропийные процессы, то есть уменьшение хаоса и упорядочивание структуры молекулярных системы. Эффект назван суб-диатермическим эффектом.
Физические процессы на клеточном уровне, которые приводят к увеличению потенциала клеточных мембран, описаны разработчиками следующим образом: Ссылаясь на известные работы Lois C. Клетки, которые не имеют транс-мембранного потенциала, не могут поддерживать этот синтез. Например, в молодых и здоровых клетках этот потенциал около 70 mV, в старых - около 50 mV, а в клетках рака всего 15mV. Импульсы повышают потенциал мембран и тем самым увеличивают энергетический ресурс клеток. Данные выводы сделаны после 10 лет наблюдений за эффектами, производимыми установкой Проф. Паппас при лечении различных клинических случаев.
Цена установки - десятки тысяч долларов, в зависимости от
варианта конктрукции. Проф. Паппас продал тысячи установок, но пока ни одной из
них нет в России
